"Under Another's Power:" Feminist Torah Through Masechet Kiddushin

A ten week online class

This class will explore pressing topics in feminist Torah in conversation with Masechet Kiddushin in the daf yomi cycle - for daf learners and those not studying daf yomi!

All about it:

Topics:

Each week will discuss a pressing topic in feminist Torah, in relationship to the week's daf. Subjects will include:

  • What is our dreamiest, most feminist, egalitarian relationship to mitzvot?

  • Is “acquisition” or “ownership” ever really a just metaphor (in our relationships with other people and with Torah)?

  • “Blemishes” and disability Torah

  • What IS Jewish marriage, and do we want it?

  • Our sages on reproductivity

  • And more!

We'll learn rabbinic texts alongside modern queer and feminist scholars like R. Dr. Rachel Adler, R. Dr. Julia Watts Belser, Eve Kosofsky Sedgewick, and more!

The nitty-gritty:

  • This class will meet on WEDNESDAYS, 5PM-6PM EASTERN. The first class will be on WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30TH, and the last class will be on WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 1ST, for a total of ten sessions, aligned with Kiddushin in the daf yomi cycle.

  • This class is designed to align with the daf, but you don't need to learn the daf to attend!

  • Exact timing tbd, depending on participants' schedules.

  • Class costs $200 for ten sessions, including optional offerings for bonus reading outside of class time.

  • All sources will be available in translation but this is geared toward people for whom this is not their first encounter with Talmud. Please reach out if you’re not sure if this is for you - I want you there!

A note on money:

  • To make this doable for me, I need to make at least $2000 for this class. That includes the teaching time, but also many hours of prep time!

  • What that means is that I need to get to 10 students, OR have a few folks who are willing to pay more.

  • I want to make it possible for everyone who wants to learn this Torah - please consider sponsoring all or part of a spot!
